New article: Exploring the Future of Digital Identity

The DRCF has published key findings from its horizon scanning work into the future of digital identity (digital verification), outlining potential regulatory implications. Read the article in full here.

We found that digital identity has potential to deliver a range of benefits, including more convenience; more accessibility and inclusion; less processing of personal data; and environmental benefits, if companies maintain fewer overlapping sets of data.

While there are some uncertainties as to exactly how digital ID will develop, our research revealed consensus that trust in ID systems is essential, with transparency, standards and vouching likely to be key. Digital ID does give rise to some significant risks that will need to be addressed as it develops, such as abuse by bad actors, misuse of personal data, and creation of a digital divide between those who use it and those who do not.

DRCF member regulators will continue work on digital ID, both together and separately, on their areas of specific interest.
